Dominican Waves: Capturing a Quiet Caribbean Memory in Watercolour
Dominican Waves by LeeBB Art
Inspired by a peaceful moment during my honeymoon in the Dominican Republic, Dominican Waves is an original watercolour painting that captures the tranquillity of the Caribbean Sea, a lone fishing boat, and the beauty of slowing down. In this article, I share the story behind the painting, my creative process, and why some of life's simplest moments often become the most memorable.
Sometimes the Quietest Moments Stay With You the Longest
People often assume inspiration comes from dramatic landscapes or once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
Sometimes it does.
But I've found that some of the strongest memories are often the simplest ones.
Dominican Waves began with one of those moments.
While on my honeymoon in the Dominican Republic, I was relaxing on the beach, enjoying the warmth of the Caribbean sunshine and listening to the gentle rhythm of the sea. As I stood with the warm water washing over my feet, I noticed a small fishing boat quietly making its way along the coastline.
There was nothing particularly dramatic happening. No spectacular storm, no incredible wildlife encounter, and no breathtaking sunset. Just everyday life unfolding in front of me.
Yet somehow, it became one of the memories that stayed with me long after we returned home.
Years later, that memory inspired this painting.
Finding Beauty in Everyday Moments
As artists, it's easy to chase dramatic subjects.
Towering mountains.
Powerful wildlife.
Explosive sunsets.
But sometimes it's the quieter scenes that have the greatest emotional impact.
Watching that lone fishing boat slowly travel across the Caribbean Sea created a feeling of complete calm. Everything seemed to slow down. The only sounds were the gentle waves reaching the shore and the distant movement of the boat against the horizon.
It reminded me that some of the most meaningful experiences don't need to be extraordinary. Sometimes they're simply peaceful.
That was the feeling I wanted to capture in Dominican Waves.
Bringing the Memory to Life
When I came to paint the piece, my goal wasn't simply to recreate the view.
I wanted to recreate the feeling.
The breaking wave in the foreground became one of the most important parts of the composition because it immediately places the viewer at the water's edge, almost as though they're standing exactly where I was that day.
From there, your eye naturally follows the water towards the lone fishing boat, which quietly anchors the painting without dominating it. The open sea and distant horizon complete the composition, creating a sense of space, freedom and tranquillity.
Why I Chose Watercolour
Watercolour felt like the perfect medium for this painting because of its ability to capture light, movement and transparency.
Using layered washes, subtle colour transitions and carefully controlled detail, I was able to recreate the movement of the Caribbean Sea while allowing the paper itself to provide the highlights and sparkle across the water.
One of the biggest challenges when painting water is knowing when to stop. Too much detail can make it feel heavy, while too little can leave it looking flat. Finding that balance is one of the things I enjoy most about painting seascapes in watercolour.
More Than a Holiday Painting
Although Dominican Waves was inspired by a holiday, I don't see it as simply a travel painting.
For me, it represents something much broader.
It reminds me to slow down.
To appreciate ordinary moments.
To notice the things we often overlook because we're busy searching for something bigger.
I hope that when someone looks at this painting, they don't simply see a Caribbean beach. I hope it reminds them of a place that made them feel calm. Perhaps it's a holiday they'll never forget, or maybe it's simply a quiet afternoon spent beside the sea.
Art has a wonderful way of reconnecting us with memories, and I'd love this painting to do exactly that.
A One-of-a-Kind Original
Dominican Waves is an original watercolour painting created using professional-quality watercolours.
As with all my original artwork, this is a unique, one-of-a-kind painting. Once it finds its forever home, it will not be recreated, making it a truly individual addition to any art collection.
Final Thoughts
Looking back, it's fascinating that one of the memories that stayed with me most from my honeymoon wasn't a grand event or famous landmark.
It was simply standing in the warm Caribbean Sea, watching a lone fishing boat make its way along the shoreline.
Sometimes those quiet moments become the ones we treasure most.
Dominican Waves is my way of preserving that memory—not only for myself, but for anyone who has ever stood beside the sea and felt the world slow down for just a little while.
