The Wilderness Series: Where Wildlife Meets Landscape
Wilderness Bear - Part of the Wilderness Series by LeeBB Art
The Wilderness Series Prints are one of my proudest collections — a group of double-exposure watercolour artworks where animals and their habitats merge into one. Each piece features the silhouette of a wild creature filled with a painted landscape that reflects its natural environment. It’s a way of celebrating the connection between animals and the places they call home, and it’s also a reflection of my own love of wildlife and the natural world.
The Inspiration Behind the Wilderness Series Prints
The idea for the Wilderness Series Prints began years ago. I always imagined painting landscapes within the silhouettes of animals — a wolf howling, an owl in flight, a stag standing tall. But it wasn’t until I’d gained more experience as an artist that I felt ready to bring that vision to life.
The double-exposure watercolour style called out to me because it’s versatile, creative, and allows endless possibilities. It’s something a little different, and it gave me a way to merge two passions: painting nature and celebrating wildlife.
The Creative Process
Every piece in the Wilderness Series Prints begins long before the first brush touches paper. It starts with an idea: how to capture both the spirit of the animal and the essence of its habitat in a way that feels natural, balanced, and alive.
Step 1: The Sketch
I begin by lightly sketching the outline of the animal or symbol. The silhouette is the foundation of each artwork, so it has to be clean and precise. This shape holds everything together — it frames the wilderness within.
Step 2: Masking the Silhouette
Once the sketch is complete, I apply masking fluid around the outline to protect the edges. It’s a fiddly, patient step, but it ensures the final shape comes out crisp. Without it, the watercolour would bleed and the edges would blur.
Step 3: Building the Landscape
This is where the fun begins. I mix my paints and start layering the landscapes inside each silhouette. Using wet-on-wet techniques, I create soft skies and atmospheric blends. Then, with wet-on-dry, I bring in sharper details — tree lines, rippling rivers, or the texture of distant mountains.
I spend a lot of time imagining how a forest canopy or a flowing river will sit inside the shape of the animal. It can be surprisingly tricky — the wrong placement could leave the silhouette looking broken or empty. That challenge is one of the things I enjoy most.
Step 4: Revealing the Edges
When the painting is dry, I carefully peel away the masking fluid. This is always my favourite part. There’s a real sense of anticipation — I never get tired of seeing the clean, bold silhouette revealed against the paper.
Step 5: The Finishing Touches
Finally, I step back and take a good look at the piece as a whole. Sometimes I’ll deepen a shadow or add a detail for balance. The goal is always the same: to make the artwork feel alive, with the animal and its landscape existing as one.
Reflections:
The stag was the most personal for me — I see deer roaming the countryside near where I live, so I feel a strong connection to them. The wolf, meanwhile, was one of the most challenging, as I had to carefully plan how the river would flow naturally through its form. But the moment the masking fluid came away and the silhouette stood strong, I knew it had been worth the effort.

Here’s a closer look at each one:
Wilderness Stag Print
Inspired by the deer that roam my local countryside, this print features a forest canopy rolling into the distance. The stag is a symbol of strength, grace, and connection to the wild.
Wilderness Bear Print
Powerful yet lovable, the bear’s silhouette contains the deep forests where it thrives. To me, the bear represents resilience and quiet strength.
Wilderness Wolf Print
Within the wolf’s form lies a river, hills, and trees — a landscape that speaks of wilderness and freedom. The wolf is often a symbol of loyalty and instinct.
Wilderness Bald Eagle Print
This artwork was inspired by the Rocky Mountains, featuring a lake, forest, and soaring peaks. The eagle represents vision, freedom, and the power of perspective.
Wilderness Brown Bear Print
Another nod to my love of bears, this piece captures the rolling landscapes and forests of its habitat, balancing power with tenderness.
Wilderness Bear Paw Print
The paw print is more than a symbol — to me, it represents strength, wilderness, and the mark animals leave on the earth.
