Sunset Pumpkin – A Celebration of Autumn Warmth

Behind the Scenes of My Autumn-Inspired Watercolour

Autumn has always been one of my favourite times of year — that moment when the air turns crisp, the light softens, and the world takes on those rich golden tones. Sunset Pumpkin was my way of capturing that feeling — the essence of sweater weather, harvest season, and cosy evenings at home.

Painted in autumn 2023, this piece was created entirely from imagination. I wanted to make something that reflected the warmth and comfort of the season, without referencing a specific place — just that universal feeling of autumn.

The Inspiration

I’ve always been drawn to autumn. There’s a special kind of magic to it — a blend of nostalgia, change, and stillness. The idea for Sunset Pumpkin came to me as I was reflecting on those moments when summer has just ended, the fields are full of pumpkins, and the sunsets seem to glow a little deeper.

I wanted to capture that sense of calm and warmth that comes from this time of year — the golden evenings, the smell of the countryside, and that unmistakable harvest feeling.

The Scene

The painting shows a field of pumpkins stretching into the distance, with a cluster of pumpkins nestled together in the foreground. Behind them, a line of trees silhouettes against a glowing sunset sky, full of oranges, pinks and soft yellows.

It’s not a real place — it’s the kind of view you might dream about on a chilly evening with a cup of tea in hand. I aimed to make it feel familiar, even if you’ve never seen this exact scene before.

Sunset Pumpkin isn’t just about pumpkins — it’s about that gentle feeling of contentment that autumn brings, when the world slows down and everything feels just a little more comfortable.

The Creative Process

This painting was a joy to create because it came entirely from imagination. I began with a light pencil outline to map out the placement of the pumpkins, the tree line, and the sunset. From there, I worked in layers — starting with the sky and background, and gradually painting forward towards the foreground pumpkins.

Working this way helps to build depth and atmosphere, especially when using watercolours.

The materials I used were:

  • Paper: Winsor & Newton 300gsm cold press watercolour paper

  • Size: 29.5cm x 35.5cm

  • Medium: Watercolour paints

At the time of painting, I was still experimenting with larger pieces — and that in itself was a challenge. Watercolour can be unpredictable, especially on a larger scale, so this piece taught me a lot about patience, layering, and letting the paint flow naturally.

As an artist, I don’t think I’ll ever stop learning or experimenting — every piece is part of that journey.

The Feeling Behind It

When I look at Sunset Pumpkin, it instantly gives me that warm, cosy feeling of early autumn evenings. The kind where you pull on your favourite jumper, light a candle, and watch the sun dip below the horizon.

I wanted the painting to carry that sense of comfort and calm, and I think it would bring that same warmth into any home. It’s the kind of artwork that would look lovely in a snug or living room — somewhere it can add a touch of colour and seasonal charm.
